At SJ, we believe that good shoes don’t have to be expensive. That’s why we spoke with Paul Borgions, an experienced Belgian podiatrist who watches over the health of our feet every day. He shares his insights on what to look for when choosing a good shoe and discusses his experience with SJ’s sneakers.

How important is it to wear good shoes?

“We take between 6,000 and 7,000 steps each day. A minor flaw in your shoes can quickly lead to significant problems. These issues may not be immediately noticeable but can cause serious damage in the long run. Therefore, it's crucial to be critical when assessing your shoes.”

What exactly makes a shoe good?

"Many people think that the price determines the quality of a shoe, but that's a misconception. More expensive shoes are not necessarily better. What truly matters are the shoe's features. Here are three simple tests you can use to assess the quality of a shoe:

  1. Flexibility at the toes: Bend the toe compartment upward. It should be able to bend at least 70°. This is important because it helps the foot roll properly, activating stabilization mechanisms in the foot, knee, and hip.
  2. Heel firmness: Squeeze the heel of the shoe just above the sole. It should not compress. A firm heel prevents excessive inward or outward tilting of the foot, which can cause issues in the foot, knee, hip, and back.
  3. Midsole firmness: Try bending the sole in the middle. It should not bend; the sole should only flex at the ball of the foot. An overly flexible midsole can cause torsion in the foot, leading to the same negative effects as a soft heel.”

How do SJ's sneakers perform on these tests?

“Keeping these three tests in mind, I thoroughly examined SJ’s sneakers. I was pleasantly surprised. They met all three criteria perfectly, and that for a price under €85. They truly offer excellent value for money.”

What makes SJ's sneakers special in your view?

“In addition to their good support and comfort, these sneakers feature removable insoles, which is ideal for people who use orthotics. The deep lacing system provides extra comfort and a good fit, while the slip-resistant outsole and sturdy collar enhance safety and durability. The sneakers are also responsibly made with recycled and natural materials, which is a significant plus in my opinion.”

Would you recommend our sneakers to others?

“Absolutely. I’ve worn both SJ’s low-cut sneakers and the higher winter model with pleasure. They offer outstanding value for money and prove that good shoes can indeed be affordable. I can recommend them with complete confidence.”
